Have Passport, Will Travel

Someone was looking out for us because today something magical happened... Gretchen's Argentine passport arrived!  We are now safe to travel outside of the country.

This officially ends the Legalizing Your Baby series.  It has been a crazy road, and considering that Gretchen will be 3 months old tomorrow, I truly believe that we accomplished this in the least amount of time possible.

Look at how excited our little princess is!  We cannot wait for her to meet the rest of her family, and now we are finally able to take a breath and just be excited for our trip.
I dare you to say this isn't the cutest photo ever

  2. Hi Dawn, quick question -- do you know why you need an Argentine passport to travel out of the country with Gretchen? I would have thought once you had the US passport, you would be able to go to the US and back and no one would know the difference.

    Thanks for the help!

  3. Hi Jeff! The reason is that her US passport lists her birthplace as Argentina, so if we show that passport as we leave Argentina, they require us to provide an Argentine passport. Basically, she cannot leave Argentina unless she has an Argentine passport, once we are outside the country, she can travel on her US passport without issue. On the most recent trip we took to the US, the United flight counter check-in required us to show her Argentine passport, DNI, birth certificate, permisso and her US passport - it was quite the stack of paperwork for a 6 month old!

  4. Thank you so much for this series of blog posts! I am a U.S. citizen who is about to have a baby here in Córdoba in December and we are moving back to the U.S. in April, so it looks like I have my work cut out for me! Erin

  5. Hi Dawn, another question! (if easier I should probably just get your email from L). When/where did you get the baby's birth certificate? I just picked up her DNI today (we got it directly through Trinidad through a rep from the Registro Civil) -- but they just gave me the DNI and 2 copies of something that says "registro del estado civil y capacidad de las personas". Any help would be great, or you can email me at jlevinsohn@gmail.com. Thanks!!

  6. Hi Dawn, thanks so much for this series of posts! We are a family from the USA who have been living in Uruguay and Argentina for the past 3 years with our daughter (who is now 4) and we're expecting baby #2 in Córdoba this coming May. We know Erin (who commented above) and she has been a huge help to understanding the paperwork process, which is a little different in Córdoba ad requires a visit to the embassy in BsAs for the US passport.

I love reading about your experiences as an expat and mother in Argentina. Your documentation is incredible and so very helpful in understanding the processes.
    Thanks again!
